BEDFORD SUPERVISORS TO PICK LANDFILL SITE

The Bedford County Board of Supervisors is expected to pick a site for a new landfill at a special meeting Wednesday.

The Board will choose between two sites which came out of a more than a year of analysis by consultants for the county. Board members themselves are expected to walkover the sites Wednesday afternoon.

They will choose between:

A 545-acre tract off Virginia 24, which was recommended by the consultants and the citizen committee designed to assist in the landfill selection process. Eight miles southwest of Bedford at Virginia 807 and Virginia 24, the site would be the least expensive available and last the longest for a landfill, consultants say. Some nearby residents have complained that a landfill would increase traffic on an already congested area around Virginia 24 and Virginia 122.

A 363-acre site seven miles south of the city along Virginia 43. Though they recommended the first site, the consultants said this site would be suitable for a landfill.
