LIBRARY IMPROVEMENTS TO BE DISCUSSED

The Smyth-Bland Regional Library will hold a community meeting Thursday at the Bland County Courthouse to hear suggestions on how county library service can be improved.

The meeting will start at 7 p.m.

The library, based in Marion, serves Bland County by bookmobile. Bland County has no library building.

Library representatives will offer alternatives to the bookmobile as well as a new books-by-mail program and literacy training.

The books-by-mail program, called the Ridge Runners Express, will start in July. It will allow readers in Bland County to get library books through the mail at no cost to them. The program is a cooperative effort with Buchanan, Russell and Tazewell counties.

Cheyrl Warren DeHart, the library's literacy coordinator, will outline a free adult literacy program for which she will hire a part-time coordinator and establish an office in Bland County.

Both programs will be payed for through Library Services and Construction Act grants. Further information is available by calling Cathy Reynolds, library director, at 783-2323.
