L.A. GEAR STOCK TUMBLES

The stock of L.A. Gear Inc., a footwear and apparel company that has undergone explosive growth since it went public three years ago, plummeted on Friday after it said it expected sharply lower second-quarter earnings.

Its shares dropped $8.50 each on the New York Stock Exchange, to $30.75, a 20 percent decline. Trading volume totaled more than 6 million shares. It had traded as high as $50 a share last month.

Citing a sluggish retail environment, the Los Angeles-based company said it expected earnings in the quarter ended May 31 to be 50 to 60 cents a share, compared with 91 cents in the quarter a year earlier. It said second-quarter sales were expected to total about $225 million, up 33 percent.
