`RETIRING' LOCOMOTIVE FORCE CSX LAYOFFS

A decision by CSX Transportation Inc. decision to retire 200 aging locomotives from its fleet will affect nearly 100 workers, company officials said.

The subsidiary of the Richmond-based CSX Corp. announced Friday that it would transfer 37 workers and lay off another 61 at operations across the Southeast.

The company said it was transferring locomotive inspection and maintenance work from shops in Tampa, Fla., and Hamlet, N.C., to operations in Waycross, Ga., and Corbin, Ky. The furloughs would affect employees at CSX shops in Clifton Forge and Cumberland, Md.

Laid-off employees will be recalled to work as positions become available, officials said. - Associated Press
