SOME HOMES LACK RELIGIOUS VALUES

I AGREE with the May 22 editorial ("Church and state in county schools") that "The proper places for children to acquire their religious beliefs are at home and places of worship." But what about the homes that have no religious values and what about the children who are never taken to places of worship? It seems to me that the Bible-study programs such as the one in Botetourt County just might be the only place a child might have to learn about God.

If an astonishing 80 to 95 percent of Botetourt County 4th-, 5th- and 6th-graders attend, surely this means there is an interest. I mean, this is definitely a majority, right?

I am a parent of one of these students, and we were not pressured. I signed a permission card and that was it. I hope one complaint won't keep dozens of children from learning the truth of the Bible. VIRGINIA M. SMITH BLUE RIDGE
