LAUDS SALEM COUNCIL ON POOL DEVELOPMENT

THE EFFORT of Salem City Council to develop a first-class indoor swimming facility with consultation by Ray Buzzard, a nationally acclaimed swimming authority, is to be lauded. It is preferable to spend money to develop swimming, recreational and fitness programs for our youth as well as adult citizens, with the hopes that it will decrease the need of spending it on those involved with drugs and crimes with "nothing to do."

Perhaps just as important would be to include a separate therapy pool approximately three feet deep with warm water, ramps, parallel bars, and other equipment that would help rehabilitate many physically handicapped individuals in this valley. Such a highly developed facility would be in demand on a year-'round basis, necessitating that it be enclosed. RICHARD H. FISHER, M.D. Lewis-Gale Clinic SALEM
