A 20-point buck Brogan killed opening day of the deer season last year in Botetourt County won the non-typical class Saturday in the Old Dominion Buck and Bass Classic 1990 at the Salem Civic Center. The unofficials Boone and Crockett score was 213 7/8.
It was the second win for the 19-year old hunter and his trophy deer. In March, Brogan, a Roanoke County native who works in Atlanta, had the contest champ during competition at Fisherville.
The next hurdle is the Virginia Big Game Contest, Sept. 21-22 at Harrisonburg, the event that determines which trophies go into the state record book.
"I've taken a week's vacation for that one," said Brogan.
Second in the non-typical class Saturday was T.J. Wright of Ferrum with a 18-point Franklin County buck that scored 209 7/8.
Any deer above 200 is an excellent trophy, said Lawrence Barger, promoter of the event.
The show, which features about 250 deer heads, including some of the top trophies of North America, continues today 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
