GROUND BORKEN FOR NURSING HOME

More than 100 people turned out to see ground broken for the 60-bed Laurel Meadows nursing home for Carroll, Floyd and Patrick counties Sunday afternoon.

They hope to be back in a year to open it. Noel Wood, representing the board of Tri-County Homes Inc., said construction is scheduled to start within four weeks and be completed in 11 months.

People from around the rural area to be served by the home raised more than $120,000 on the project in 1988. That money covered architect's drawings, wells to provide a water supply, and other preliminary work.

A $2.85 million bonding package will provide money for construction on the 18-acre site on U.S. 58 between Laurel Fork and Meadows of Dan. The project has been carried out under the auspices of Virginia Lutheran Homes, organized in 1967 to assist in construction of facilities to care for the elderly.

The Rev. Robert Fellows of Roanoke, who will be retiring this month as president and chief executive officer of Virginia Lutheran Homes, said bringing the project to this stage has not been easy.

"We couldn't have done anything without the interest and support of this community," he said.

Robert Jackson, first chairman of the local board, broke ground during the ceremony and was later presented with the shovel in recognition of his work on the project.

Donations still are needed to repay the bonds and can be sent to Tri-County Homes Inc., P.O. Box 87, Laurel Fork, Va. 24352.
