APPRECIATES WORK OF POSTAL SERVICE

IT'S TIME people start appreciating the work that goes into mailing a letter. For a very small cost you can mail a letter, an invitation, a birth announcement, anything, anywhere in the United States.

True, letters get lost. True, mail is late. What's commendable is the bulk of mail that is handled efficiently and quickly.

We pay for our telephone whether we use it or not. Cable TV costs even if we never turn it on. We pay dearly for the convenience of credit cards. The cost of a stamp is an expenditure used only if and when we choose to use the service.

R. Richard Geddes (Commentary May 22) doesn't like waiting on lines at the Post Office. Are they all right at banks and grocery stores? How about at movie theaters or Disney World? Lines are everywhere.

He went so far as to suggest postal workers lose their rights to vote. Wonder what he thinks of women voters? Of black voters?

I for one am grateful for what we have. There are many dedicated, hard-working people willing to get out in any weather just to deliver my mail. To them I say, "thank you."
