BLACK HISTORY EVENT NEGLECTED

"PIN POINTS" is a Washington, D.C.-based theater group that takes subjects such as biography, history and math, and puts them into theatrical formats that educate and entertain.

The performance in Roanoke, sponsored by the Harrison Museum of African-American Culture, was superb. It was entitled "1001 Black Inventions," and it enhanced the study of black history by being informative, fun and entertaining.

The auditorium should have been standing-room-only, but to my dismay it was not. The assistant superintendent of administration was contacted numerous times and given literature about the program; he was not interested, even though the only obligation would have been student transportation.

Are contributions of black people important only during February? Black history should be on the priority list of educators and parents every month of the year.

Our children black and white should be aware of contributions made by black Americans. Black children should especially be aware of these contributions because it gives a sense of pride and encourages their determination to overcome barriers and fulfill their goals.
