Six motorists reported that their cars were struck with bottles within several hours Sunday morning.
Police attributed the problem to a disorderly crowd of more than 200 people that often surged into the street in the 500 block of 11th Street.
Daniel Ray Ireson, 31, of Northeast Roanoke, told police that he was driving his pickup down 11th Street about 3:20 a.m. Sunday, with his sister following behind him.
When he approached the 500 block, a crowd of people began to throw bottles at his truck, Ireson told police. Some members of the crowd then ran up to his truck and began to hit and kick it, police said.
Ireson and his sister sped away after their vehicles received about $3,000 in damage. Ireson told police that he did nothing to provoke the attack.
Tracy Seawell reported a similar incident to police that happened about the same time in the same area.
Seawell said that one bottle hit her windshield and another came through a window and struck her on the right shoulder. She was treated by rescue workers, but apparently was not seriously injured.
Police estimated damage to her car at about $100.
Three other people reported similar - though apparently less serious - incidents that happened in the same area at about 2:45, 2:53 and 3:10 a.m., police said.
Police who responded to the reports found a large amount of broken glass in the street and a large crowd nearby. An investigation is continuing.
