CONSUMERS MAY BE WITHOUT COVERAGE

Roanoke-area consumers who purchased auto and homeowners insurance policies through former insurance agent Scott A. Schmidt may not have coverage, according to the Bureau of Insurance of the State Corporation Commission.

A bureau investigation has revealed that the applications of dozens of Roanoke area consumers were never sent to an insurance company by Schmidt, or his firm, Valley Insurance Agency, 5524 Williamson Road.

Consumers who think they may be without insurance coverage should contact the insurance carrier which was supposed to issue the policy, or the bureau at (800) 552-7945. Consumers who already have talked with the bureau about Schmidt or Valley Insurance need not call again, the bureau said.

Earlier this month, Schmidt, 30, voluntarily surrendered his insurance license at the request of the bureau. The request was the result of an investigation prompted by complaints from customers who had paid insurance premiums but had not received policies.
