SUMMER HIRING DOWN, QUARTER SURVEY SHOWS

Summer-hiring plans by Roanoke area employers are lower than usual, according to a third quarter survey by Manpower Inc.

Hiring for the summer quarter, traditionally a time of strong employment, was reported by 20 percent of the employers surveyed, down from 23 percent a year ago.

Plans for work-force cutbacks were reported by 10 percent.

The best job potential for the Roanoke area is in construction, trade and services, while prospects are less promising in education and manufacturing of durable goods, according to Ann Ward, Roanoke manager of Manpower.
