On a 4-2 vote, the board agreed to finance the project through a 15-year loan from the state's literary fund.
The facility - which also is to be open to the public in the evenings - is scheduled for completion in April 1992.
School officials first requested the facility three years ago, saying that the high school's 20-year-old weight room was outdated and put the school's athletes at a competitive disadvantage. "It has been described as the sorriest in the region," said high school principal William Owings.
The first payment of $20,300 will be due in June 1992. The cost includes neither renovations of the existing weight room for special education therapy nor equipment for the new facility. Owings said two parent groups would raise money for the equipment.
Voting in favor of the fitness center were: Supervisors Gus Forry, Homer Murray, Mike Brooks and Wayne Angell. Voting against were: Ronnie Woods and Gordon Washburn. Charles Ellis had to leave the meeting early and did not vote.
