RADFORD'S LEFTWICH GETS THE CALL

The California Angels chose Radford University pitcher Phil Leftwich on Monday in the second round of baseball's amateur draft.

The junior right-hander was the 64th player chosen overall and is expected to begin negotiations with the team today.

Leftwich, who holds 21 school records including career victories (19), ERA (3.63) and strikeouts (234), was 6-6 with a 3.35 ERA during the 1990 season. The 6-foot-5, 195-pounder had his best season as a sophomore, when he was 7-2 with a 2.88 ERA. - Staff report
