The Keys held serve Monday night at Salem Municipal Field by pounding out 14 hits in a 9-1 sinking of the Buccaneers.
Pitchers Jeff Bumgarner and Todd Stephan combined on an eight-hitter and stranded 13 Salem runners as the Keys improved their record to 29-23 and maintained a one-game lead over Lynchburg.
"We didn't get the clutch hits," said Stan Cliburn, the Bucs' manager. "We get some early hits and it's a different ballgame."
Trailing 1-0 after a first-inning home run by Ricky Gutierrez, Salem had two men on with one out in the second. But Bumgarner (1-2) retired Mike Huyler on a come-backer and struck out Rob Bailey to end the threat.
Bucs starter Tim Wakefield (2-5) set down the first two batters in the third inning, but then Tony Beasley singled. Gutierrez walked and Tim Holland, Ken Shamburg and Pete Rose Jr. all singled to increase the lead to 4-0.
Salem's run came in the fourth when Bailey walked with the bases loaded to force in Chris Estep, but Frederick added an unearned run in the sixth.
The Bucs (21-33) had another good scoring opportunity in the seventh when Greg Sims and Bruce Schreiber walked to start the inning.
Stephan relieved Bumgarner and got Domingo Merejo to pop out in foul territory on his first pitch. Stephan then struck out Tim Hines and ended the inning by retiring Darwin Pennye on an infield fly.
"I was just thinking, `Get ahead of the hitters,' " said Stephan, who picked up his second save. "I was concerned about giving up a home run. I've pitched in this park before and haven't had much success. I was keeping everything away, and fortunately they were going for the outside pitch and popping it up."
Frederick put the game out of reach in the eighth, scoring four runs on five hits off Bucs reliever Chip Duncan.
\ BUCSHOTS: Bucs reliever Tom Deller was placed on the suspended list by the Pittsburgh Pirates after he retired last week. Deller, in his second season as a pro, pitched 23 innings and was 1-2 with three saves and a 4.24 ERA.
