COMPANION PLANTING IS PROGRAM TOPIC

The May meeting of the Arboretum Garden Club was held at the home of Mrs. J.C. Hassall and featured a program on companion planting.

Presented by master gardeners Arlene Hoffman and Emily Collins, the program discussed the do's and don'ts of companion planting, such as planting corn and squash together, but not onions and beans, while certain flowers are helpful in controlling insects.

Commemorating Teacher Appreciation Week, awards were given for two paper bouquets made by kindergartners at Margaret Beeks School.

Mrs. W.P. Judkins, Blue Ridge District delegate, gave a report. Mrs. D.L. Kinnear presided at the business meeting. Mrs. F.E. Willard and Mrs. R.L. Humbert reported on the state convention of the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs at Abingdon. A picnic is scheduled today at the home of Mrs. William Alderson.

Mrs. John Palmer was awarded a blue ribbon for her assigned arrangement, "May Basket: A Tribute to Mothers." Mrs. J.C. Hassall received a blue ribbon for her Japanese design. Awards in horticulture were awarded to Mrs. W.E. Holberton and Mrs. W.P. Judkins.
