HISTORIAN OF BLACKS' PORTRAYAL IN ART DIES

Guy C. McElroy, 44, an art historian who organized an exhibition on the portrayal of black people in American art, died last week of a pulmonary embolism, it was learned Tuesday.

McElroy conceived the show titled "Facing History: The Black Image in American Art, 1710-1940," four years ago and was guest curator at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, where the exhibition opened in January. The show now is appearing at the Brooklyn Museum in New York.

A native of Fairmont, W.Va., McElroy had held curatorial posts in museums and public galleries on the East and West coasts since the mid-1970s.
