CONVENIENCE STORE NEAR EXPLORE PARK APPROVED

The Roanoke County Planning Commission on Tuesday gave its approval to Henry Brabham's request to build a convenience store on Hardy Road near the site of the planned Explore Park.

The 5,000-square-foot store would be built next to Brabham's Lancer Mart, a smaller convenience store one-half mile west of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Lancer Mart would be closed after the new store was built.

In a memo to the commission, county planner Janet Scheid cautioned that the rezoning would open the door for more commercial development along Hardy Road. Explore traffic won't use Hardy Road, so allowing more commercial development now might be "premature," she wrote.

But Planning Commission member Wayland Winstead said it was unlikely there would be a lot of development on Hardy Road.

The Planning Commission voted unanimously to recommend that the Board of Supervisors approve the rezoning.
