GIRL, 12, STRUCK BY POLICE CAR DIES OF INJURIES

A 12-year-old girl died Wednesday of injuries she suffered when she was struck by a police car responding to a burglary, authorities said.

Janice Marie Emerson was flown to Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., after she was hit about 8 a.m. Tuesday by a police car driven by Officer L.E. Johns.

She died at the hospital Wednesday afternoon, said Bob Wells, a hospital spokesman.

The girl was trying to cross the street to get to her school bus, which was making a stop.

Johns' patrol car was traveling, with its blue lights on but no siren, between 30 mph and 35 mph in a 25 mph zone.

"There was no way anyone could avoid hitting her," said bus driver Alice Brown, who saw the accident. Brown said the girl ran into the street looking straight ahead. "She never looked right or left. She ran into the car."
