School Board members meeting in special session Wednesday unanimously approved the bid of $11,258,643 for the new building.
The bid must go to the Rockbridge County supervisors for approval before construction can begin.
The supervisors are expected to approve the bid at their Monday night regular meeting.
Total cost of the building will be $13.2 million with an additional $996,165 budgeted for equipment and $220,192 in a contingency fund. Architectural services have run $725,000 bringing the total to $13.2 million.
Supervisors previously indicated they would not approve the expenditure if the contractor's bid drove the total price above the $13.2 million figure that county voters approved last year.
School officials and architects met to review the bids, and Superintendent Glenn Stark recommended the Branch and Associates bid to the School Board.
The new school will consolidate the three high schools serving the county and will be built near the Kay Vo-Tech Center north of Lexington. The center serves all the county schools.
School officials have touted consolidation as a way of offering more curriculum opportunities in a cost-effective way. In 1974, a proposed consolidated high school at a cost of $7 million was not pursued.
Construction on the new school is to begin Tuesday pending the supervisors' approval of the bid. The new school will open to students in the fall of 1992, Stark said.
