HOKIES' MARGHEIM SIGNS WITH CINCINNATI

Virginia Tech pitcher Greg Margheim signed a contract Wednesday with the Cincinnati Reds, the National League team announced.

Terms of the deal were not revealed.

Margheim, a left-hander from Stafford, was the team's 25th pick in baseball's free-agent draft this week. He was assigned to the Reds' Pioneer League farm team in Billings, Mont.

As a senior for Virginia Tech this season, Margheim, 22, had a 4-5 record and a 5.04 earned-run average in 80 innings. He was second on the team with 75 strikeouts but led the team in walks with 46.

One of Tech's signees also signed a contract. Castlewood High catcher Mitch House, taken in the fourth round by Pittsburgh, signed with the Pirates. - Staff report
