WORKER KILLED IN CHRISTIANSBURG

A construction worker was killed Wednesday afternoon in Christiansburg after a ditch caved in on him while he was laying pipe.

The accident occurred about 5 p.m. at Vista Via apartments near Christiansburg High School, said Larry Sutherland, a member of the Christiansburg Rescue Squad.

The construction worker was dead at the scene. Christiansburg police did not release any other information about the accident or the victim's name, saying the next of kin had not been notified.

Sutherland said the construction crew appeared to be laying pipe from existing structures in the apartment complex to an open field.
