BUCS LOSE ONE IN THE WEE HOURS

Well, somebody had to win.

Rick Gutierrez singled in Tony Beasley about 15 minutes before 1 a.m. today as the Frederick Keys beat the Salem Buccaneers 5-4 in 17 innings in a Carolina League baseball game at Municipal Field.

With two out in the top of the 17th, Beasley singled off Bucs reliever Mike Pomeranz (3-4). Then Mike Lehman doubled down the left-field line with Beasley stopping at third.

Gutierrez slapped a hard single up the middle, scoring Beasley with what became the winning run.

The Bucs had a chance to win with two on and one out in the bottom of the inning. However, Frederick reliever David Riddle (1-1) struck out Greg Sims, then retired Bruce Schreiber on a ground out to end the second-longest game in Buccaneers history.

"You won't see one much better than that one," Frederick manager Wally Moon said. "It had a little bit of everything."

The Bucs led 4-3 with two out in the eighth inning when Tyrone Kingwood hit his first home run of the season off Salem reliever Jim Czajkowski to tie the game. Czajkowski, who was voted Carolina League pitcher of the week, didn't give up a run in seven innings over four appearances last week.

Salem had other opportunities to win in the extra innings.

In the 11th and 15th innings, the Bucs had the bases loaded with just one out, but both times Schreiber and Domingo Merejo popped out to end the inning.

For the game, the Bucs stranded 18 runners, 10 in extra innings.

Frederick scored four of its five runs by way of two-out rallies.

In the first inning, Ken Shamburg hit a two-run homer off starter Paul Miller after Tim Holland had singled with two outs.

The Bucs made it 2-2 in the second when Chris Estep hit a solo homer, his league-leading 11th. Then Schreiber singled in Mike Huyler, who was 4-for-5 and scored two runs. They scored two unearned runs in the fourth to take the 4-3 lead.
