DANVILLE GIRL STRUCK BY POLICE CAR DIES

A Danville girl died one day after being struck by a police car that was speeding while responding to a burglary call.

Janice Marie Emerson, 12, was flown to Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., after being hit Tuesday morning. She died Wednesday afternoon, hospital spokesman Bob Wells said.

Danville police said the girl was trying to cross the street to get to her school bus, which was making a stop, when she was struck by a cruiser driven by Officer L.E. Johns.

Johns' car was traveling between 30 and 35 mph in a 25-mph zone, police said. He reportedly had the vehicle's blue lights on but no siren.

"There was no way anyone could avoid hitting her," said bus driver Alice Brown, who said she saw the accident. "She never looked right or left. She ran into the car."

No charges have been filed.
