Wayne C. Chapman, Donna E. Gilbert and J. Carolyn Woodall have won the state Department of Social Services' meritorious service award.
The Roanoke district office of the department's child-support division covers 20 cities and counties. It is the fifth largest in the state, but last year it was first in collecting support in welfare cases, with a total of more than $2.5 million.
State welfare commissioner Larry D. Jackson says he expects the Roanoke office to surpass $3 million in welfare collections this year.
Jackson praises Chapman, manager of the district office, for leadership and commitment in helping to increase collections in welfare cases. Jackson says Woodall, an enforcement supervisor, "has been innovative and daring" in the push for welfare collections.
Jackson praises Gilbert, also an enforcement supervisor, for her work in "establishing paternities" - that is, proving the fatherhood of children and holding the fathers financially responsible for them.
Jackson says a new process set up under Gilbert has helped to nearly triple the number of paternities established by the district office.
