CITY SHERIFF APPOINTED TO ANTI-DRUG PANEL

Roanoke Sheriff Alvin Hudson has been appointed by Gov. Douglas Wilder to a new 11-member Local Anti-Drug Trust Fund Authority.

The authority has power to make direct grants for programs developed by local law enforcement agencies to eliminate the use, manufacture, sale or distribution of illegal drugs. Hudson represents local law enforcement officials.

The sheriff's office has a state grant for a drug-testing machine and a new paramedic who administers the tests for felons before they are tried. Of 105 felons committed to jail last year, Hudson said, more than one-third voluntarily took a drug test and probably 65 percent had positive results.

The drug test is used as a condition for bonding, he said. A bond is continued if the person is drug-free in a weekly testing. If the test is positive, the bond is revoked.
