FOURTEEN ROANOKE-AREA HIGH SCHOOL VALEDICTORIANS

Fourteen Roanoke-area high school valedictorians were recognized June 6 at the 12th annual Valedictorian Night awards banquet, sponsored by the Roanoke Elks Club.

Judge Diane Strickland was the guest speaker for the event, which honored the top graduating seniors from Roanoke, Salem and Roanoke, Botetourt, Craig and Floyd counties.

The valedictorians honored are:

Jeffrey Kyle Baker, Lord Botetourt High School. He is the captain of the Lord Botetourt soccer team and the president of his school's National Honor Society. He was a scholarship winner for the U.S. Senate/Japan Program for Youth Understanding. Baker will attend the University of Virginia as an Echols Scholar.

Scott Shannon Carter, William Byrd High School. Carter has participated and lettered in varsity baseball since 10th grade. He was named outstanding senior in math and Latin, and received an Elks Foundation Most Valuable Student scholarship. Carter has received an appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy, where he will study astronautical engineering or space operations.

Mark R. Flory, Northside High School. He has studied piano since 1980 and in 1989 he attended the summer Governor's Fine Arts Program at Radford. He was inducted into Virginia Junior Academy of Science in 11th grade and earned a second place award at the academy convention for research on plant viruses in his senior year. Flory, a member of National Honor Society, will attend the University of Richmond on an Oldham scholarship.

Lisa Johnson, Berean Christian Academy. She has been a member of the school cheerleading squad for four years and has played varsity softball for two years. She has been active in the school choir and has acted in several school productions. Johnson plans to study elementary education at Bob Jones University.

Henry N. Lin, Cave Spring High School. Lin was one of 24 students in Virginia chosen to attend the 1989 Summer Governor's School at the Medical College of Virginia. Lin has studied Russian, Spanish and Latin. In 1987 he participated in the National Knowledge Master Open, in which his team placed first statewide. Lin will attend the University of Virginia.

Melony Beth Martin, Glenvar High School. Martin is a member of National Honor Society. She was listed in "Who's Who Among American High School Students" during her junior and senior years, and received the National Conference of Christians and Jews Brotherhood/Sisterhood Award this year. Martin will attend Freed-Hardeman University in Tennessee.

Whitney Mathews, Patrick Henry High School. Mathews works at Roanoke Memorial Hospitals in the neonatal department. She also is the president of the student body of CITY School. In her freshman year, she was a page for the Virginia General Assembly. Mathews will attend Washington and Lee University.

Karla L. Miller, James River High School. Miller is a Scholastic All-American. She has participated in Odyssey of the Mind for four years, placing at the regional and state levels. Her artwork has been displayed at the Center in the Square, and she is the recipient of the Rovocon Comic Art Award. Miller plans to attend George Mason University.

Ann Parker, William Fleming High School. Parker hasn't missed a day of school since the fourth grade. She has participated in science fairs, winning second place in the microbiology category her senior year. She is a member of the National Beta Club. Parker plans to attend Roanoke College and major in education.

Clarence Michael Reynolds, Craig County High School. He is the secretary of the senior class and the student council. He has participated in Boys' State and is president of the Ecology Club. Reynolds will attend Virginia Tech, where he is planning to major in a science-related field.

Elissa Janena Smith, Roanoke Valley Christian Schools. Smith has played volleyball, basketball and softball since ninth grade and has lettered in each sport. She also lettered with the varsity women's cross country team. She was a commended student in the 1989 National Achievement Scholarship Program. Smith has received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy where she plans to major in aerospace engineering.

Robyn Elizabeth Smith, Salem High School. Smith has earned a German Achievement award for her five years' study of the language. She has served as the news editor, associate editor, and editor-in-chief of the school newspaper. Smith has also had her artwork displayed at Center in the Square and in the General Assembly Building in Richmond. Smith will attend the University of Virginia with a possible premed major.

William McKinley Thompson IV, Roanoke Catholic School. He has lettered in soccer and was the captain of the soccer team. He was a nominee for the Jefferson Scholarship at the University of Virginia, and was a G.E. Star Scholarship recipient. Thompson plans to attend the University of Virginia and major in biology/premed.

Michael James Whalen, Floyd County High School. He served as SCA president in his senior year. Whalen has participated in cross country for three years, earning all-district and all-regional honors. He also was president of the Math Club. Whalen will attend the U.S. Military Academy, where he will study engineering. S4 S1 HONORS Honors
