RELIGION BRIEFS

THE REV. CLAY TURNER, rector of St. John's Episcopal Church for the past 15 years, has begun a three-month sabbatical leave. Turner said he hopes to complete work on a doctor of ministry degree he is taking from Princeton Theological Seminary.

The Rev. Elsa Hale, associate rector, will administer the work of the downtown Roanoke church until he returns.

AN EAST GERMAN PASTOR, the Rev. Johannes Richter, will speak Sunday at Christ Lutheran Church, 2011 Brandon Ave. S.W. Richter, who has visited the church previously, will preach at 8:30 and 11 a.m. and discuss conditions in his changing country at a 9:45 a.m. forum.

\ WORLD MISSIONS are being emphasized this month at West End United Methodist Church, 13th and Campbell Southwest. At the 10:30 a.m. services Sunday and June 17 mission volunteers to overseas countries will speak. At 5 p.m. Sunday a fellowship hall festival, open to the public, will include tastings of native food, skits and songs. An offering will be taken for the support of the church's mission worker in Japan.

\ A "LORD, HEAL MY HURTS" CLASS, which begins tonight at Calvary Memorial Church, is especially for students 13 to 20 years old. It will meet Thursdays through the summer from 7 to 9. Call Karen Fuller, 387-2125.

\ WOODSIDE EVANGELICAL PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 2321 Roanoke Ave. S.W., has scheduled vacation Bible school June 18-22. It will be for children of nursery through teens from 7 to 9 p.m.

\ VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL is planned June 18-22 at Raleigh Court United Methodist Church, 1706 Grandin Road S.W. It will be from 9:30 a.m. to noon and is open to children 3 through 10. Call Melissa Ferguson, 344-6011 to register.

\ A SUMMER INTERN, Amy Patteson, has begun work at Colonial Avenue Baptist Church. Patteson, who had a similar job there last year, will be a senior this fall at the University of Richmond.

\ THE ANGELIC CHOIR of High Street Baptist Church will present a program Sunday at 4 p.m. in the sanctuary at 2302 Florida Ave. N.W. Lorraine Pleasants is director.
