CONSTRUCTION VICTIM WAS SON OF DEAN

A worker killed Wednesday when a ditch collapsed on him has been identified as the son of a Virginia Tech dean.

Simon Peter Eyre, 23, a college student working on a construction job for the summer, was pronounced dead at the scene at about 4:30 p.m.

He was the son of Peter Eyre, dean of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine.

Police said the incident occurred near the Vistavia Apartments behind Christiansburg High School.

Eyre, a student at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, was home for the summer and worked on the construction crew, a veterinary-school spokesman said.

He and other construction workers had been laying pipe in the ditch leading from buildings at the apartment complex to a nearby open field. Police said they did not know what caused the ditch to collapse.
