NEW CHILD LABOR SWEEP LAUNCHED

Federal investigators who found 15,000 violations of child-labor laws during a three-day nationwide sweep in March followed with a surprise one-day effort this week, the Labor Department said Thursday.

The nearly 1,000 enforcement officials who fanned out across the country Wednesday did not immediately report the number of violations they uncovered at nearly 1,900 businesses, the department said.

During the March sweep, agents visited mostly fast-food restaurants, grocery stores and other service businesses that employ large numbers of youngsters. This week's effort included agriculture and the garment industry, officials said. - Associated Press
