SCC OKS CUT IN FREE DIRECTORY-HELP CALLS

The State Corporation Commission has ruled that Virginia telephone companies may reduce the number of free directory-assistance calls from eight to three a month - but to offset the added revenue, the five largest companies must lower their basic rates.

The SCC said this is a temporary concession until the fairest method of charging for directory assistance can be found. The companies were given a year to implement the new call allowance and rate reduction.

Offsetting rate reductions were not mandated for Virginia's 16 small telephone companies. A charge of 29 cents for each call beyond the limit will stay the same. - Staff report
