SMITH'S 63 SETS RECORD AT RCC

Mike Smith, bidding to become the first player to win the Roanoke Valley Golf Hall of Fame championship for two clubs, heads into this year's tournament off a course-record performance at Roanoke Country Club.

Smith shot an 8-under-par 63 Tuesday on the Dogwood and Redbud nines to erase Ralph English's record of 65 that had stood for more than 15 years.

Hunting Hills is bidding for its third men's team championship but will have to do so without Smith, who has transferred his membership to Roanoke this year. Smith belonged to Roanoke earlier in his career and represented Botetourt Country Club as recently as 1986.

Hunting Hills should remain strong with the return of three-time champion Dicky Linkous, who lost to Smith on the third hole of a sudden-death playoff last year.

The first round will be played today at Hunting Hills.

The second round of the men's tournament and the first round of the women's Hall of Fame will be played Saturday, with the final round Sunday at Hidden Valley.

Sara Cole of Countryside won the women's event last year in a playoff with three-time champion Penny Stallins of Roanoke.

Roanoke won the women's team title for the third consecutive year.

Roanoke pro Wayne Holley, this year's inductee to the Hall of Fame, said Smith's score will be considered a record, although the fourth hole has been shortened and downgraded from a par-5 to a par-4 since English's round.

Smith shot a 3-under-par 32 on the front side without a birdie on either of the par-5s, then had five birdies en route to a 31 on the back.
