BUCS TOP KEYS 9-5

Salem Buccaneers pitcher Steve Buckholz didn't exactly frown at prosperity, but neither did he embrace it.

The Bucs staked Buckholz to a nine-run lead in the first three innings Thursday night at Salem Municipal Field. And although he was the winning pitcher in a 9-5 Carolina League victory over the Frederick Keys, Buckholz wasn't overwhelmed by his performance.

Buckholz (6-3) stopped Salem's three-game losing streak, but he gave up 11 hits, five earned runs and two home runs along the way. He also missed a chance to pitch a complete game when he walked Mike Richardson to start the ninth inning and was replaced by Mike Pomeranz.

"I'm glad I got the win," Buckholz said, "but I'm real disappointed with the number of earned runs and hits."

Buckholz may have relaxed a bit after the Bucs touched Keys starter Chuck Ricci (4-6) for nine runs on 11 hits in the first three innings. Salem went through the batting order twice and every Buc had at least one hit off Ricci.

Darwin Pennye and Bruce Schreiber had two each.

But Ken Shamburg hit a home run off Buckholz to lead off the fourth, and Tyrone Kingwood added a two-run shot with one out in the inning.

"It's easy to relax with a big lead," Buckholz said. "After that hanging curve Shamburg hit, I should have beared down right then. I didn't. Then [Kingwood] hit the other one and that was a wake-up."

Still, the next two Keys after Kingwood singled, but Buckholz retired Tony Beasley and Richardson on fly outs to avoid further damage.

In the fifth and seventh innings, Buckholz gave up singles to the first two Frederick batters, but in each situation he retired the next three without allowing the runners to advance.

\ BUCSHOTS: Domingo Merejo, who was batting .303 and leading the Carolina League with 47 RBI, was assigned from the Bucs to Harrisburg of the Eastern League (AA). Mike Brewington was called up from Augusta (Ga.) of the South Atlantic League and immediately was inserted into the Bucs' starting line up. He doubled to drive in a run in his first Salem at-bat and was 2-for-4.
