MAN SURRENDERS IN DUAL SLAYINGS AT STATE HOSPITAL

A man surrendered nearly five hours after allegedly shooting three people on the grounds of Eastern State Hospital on Thursday, fatally wounding two of the victims, authorities said.

Lloyd Christian Sr. turned himself over to police at the psychiatric hospital shortly before 10 p.m., James City County police said.

Christian, 56, of Toano, was alone, unarmed and complaining of chest pains when he was apprehended, Middlebrook said. The suspect was taken to Williamsburg Community Hospital to be examined, the captain said.

A domestic dispute apparently prompted Christian to fire an undetermined number of shots from a .38-caliber pistol into a car in a parking lot at the psychiatric hospital, authorities said.

Capt. Ken Middlebrook said said Christian killed Maxine Bartlett, also of Toano, and Van Overby, 54, of York County, and injured Kizzy Christian, 12, of Toano.

Middlebrook said Bartlett was Christian's ex-wife and the girl was their daughter.
