GIRL KILLED IN VAN WRECK

A girl was killed and eight other youngsters and three adults injured Thursday when an outing by a group of West Virginia schoolchildren ended with a crash on Interstate 64.

State police Sgt. D. Hunter Hepburn said an eastbound van carrying the group from Summersville, W.Va., ran off the left edge of the road, hit a guard rail, turned over at least twice and landed on its top in the median strip.

Hepburn said several passengers were thrown. The wreck occurred at 10:24 a.m. near the Goochland-Louisa county line about midway between Richmond and Charlottesville.

State police identified the dead girl as Stacy L. Alderman, 9, of Richwood, W.Va.

Her mother, Jane C. Alderman, 28, was the driver of the van, according to Ron Welty, a spokesman for the Nicholas County School Board in West Virginia.

The injured, all from Summersville or Richwood, were taken to hospitals in Richmond and Charlottesville.

Jane Alderman and Kami Hines, 11, went to the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals in Richmond, said MCV spokesman Rand Walton. The woman was in critical condition, and the girl was in stable condition, Walton said.

Five children were sent to the University of Virginia Hospital. David Hall, a hospital spokesman, said Thursday night that Jaime Herold, 12; Elizabeth A. Vaughn, 11; and Katherine Hill, 12, were in fair condition. Teddy P. Alderman, 10, was in good condition. Jeffrey Aide, 12, was treated and released.

A spokeswoman for Humana Hospital-Saint Luke's in Richmond said Kenneth H. Cottle, 12, and Twilla G. Lykins, 33, were treated and released.

Two other passengers, Mildred Butcher, 46, and her 11-year-old daughter, Patricia Butcher, were treated at Saint Mary's Hospital in Richmond.

The group was on a trip to Busch Gardens, a theme park near Williamsburg.
