WHERE TO TEE OFF AT SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE

Following is a list of golf courses at Smith Mountain Lake:

Chestnut Creek: Course will remain open to the public unless membership grows too large and votes to become private. Nine holes, the eventual back nine, have been in play since September. Developer David Smith hopes to open nine more by the end of the year. Designed by Russell Breeden of Greenville, S.C. Par: 72. Yardage: 6,400 to 6,600. Located off Virginia 616 in Franklin County. Member cart fees: $6.50 for nine, $4 for 18. Non-member fees: $12 for greens fees and $8 for carts for 18 holes, $7 for greens fees and $5 for carts for nine holes. Initiation fee of $3,500 is waived for property owners. Yearly dues are $500 for golf, $700 for all activities.

Deerwood Pointe: Membership limited to property owners in Deerwood Pointe development. Owner Jim Ray hopes to open back nine this summer, with front nine to follow in 1991. A third nine has been staked out. Designed by Robert Trent Jones architectural firm. Located on Craddock Creek off Virginia 626 in Bedford County.

Stone Manor: Course open to the public until membership becomes self-sufficient. It is not necessary to own property to be a member. Nine holes opened last summer, with the second nine to be finished this summer. Developer: Marvin Young. Designed by L. Randall Thomas. Par: 72: Yardage: 5,767. Located off Virginia 757 and 653 in Bedford County, 20 miles from downtown Roanoke. Fees: $8 greens fee and $12 cart fee for 18 holes, $5 greens fee and $7 cart fee for nine. Property owners are issued a share of stock as part of the purchase price. Non-residents may become members by purchasing a share of stock for $2,400. Initiation fee is $500. Dues are $38 per month.

Waterfront: Membership limited to property owners. First course to be opened on the lake, with front nine in play since 1981 and back nine since 1984. Designed by George Dillon of George Fazio group. Par: 71. Yardage: 6,684. Located off Virginia 616 on Franklin County side of the lake.

Water's Edge: Membership limited to property owners. Course opened May 14, 1988. Designed by Buddy Loving of Ivy. Rated one of the top 10 courses in the state by Virginia Golfer. Par: 72. Yardage: 6,840. Located off Virginia 40 and 645 in Franklin County.
