"About the only thing we can't take right now is tin," said Mayor William Warwick, who came up with the recycling plan.
Residents will not have to separate the materials, but will be asked to clean cans and bottles and squash plastic and cardboard containers to make sorting easier. The sorting will be done by town employees and volunteers from the Rooftop of Virginia Community Action Program.
Recycling will be carried out in the Grayson County town's old mill building, closed since Mount Vernon Mills left in 1989 and turned it over to the town. Letters have gone out to residents explaining the program.
In the future, the recycling center may be able to take materials from neighboring localities.
