2 RELEASED EARLY CHARGED IN ATTACKS

Two inmates released from the city jail under a state-sponsored pretrial release program designed to ease crowded cells are back in custody after being charged with committing violent crimes.

Tuesday night, Joseph A. Lashley allegedly raped and attempted to rob a 35-year-old woman. Early Wednesday morning, Troy D. Dale allegedly stabbed an elderly woman and robbed her of $200.

Both men had been released under a state program run by the commonwealth's attorney's office since January 1989. To qualify, a prisoner must have no past record of violent crimes and be unable to post more than a $5,000 bond.
