PARDONED MAN FACES CHARGE OF MURDER

A man who was pardoned by Gov. Douglas Wilder in April for a murder he did not commit was indicted Friday in the killing of a reputed drug gang leader last week.

Russell L. Gray was indicted on charges of murder and use of a firearm in a felony by a Richmond Circuit Court grand jury, said Richmond Commonwealth's Attorney Joseph D. Morrissey.

Gray was charged with gunning down Clayton M. Brown, 20, as Brown sat on steps near his home. Police described Brown as a major figure in a drug gang that has been involved in a turf war with another group headed by Daniel and Donald Flax.

Daniel Flax was shot to death last year in an unsolved slaying and Donald Flax is in prison on federal drug convictions.

Gray was being held on $100,000 bond.
