VOLUNTEERS COLLECT TONS OF DEBRIS DURING CLEANUP

More than 700 volunteers collected more than 50 tons of debris during the third annual Take Pride in Smith Mountain Lake cleanup day held May 19.

In addition, three truckloads of cans, bottles and other recyclable materials were taken to the Bedford Recycling Center.

Kelly Schwartz, Bedford County's litter-control officer, said that the county would donate $125 to the cleanup-day committee for next year's event.

The turnout for this year's cleanup was more than double the number of volunteers who showed up last year to clean up litter from the roadways and waterways of Bedford, Franklin and Pittsylvania counties.

Ron Pasmore, executive director of the Smith Mountain Lake Partnership, a sponsor of the event, said he hoped the cleanup day would win a national "Keep America Beautiful" award for a second straight year.
