NAMES ON CAMPUS

Gamma Sigma Delta, the honor society of agriculture, recognized students and faculty from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences:\ LAURA B. SHERMAN of Fairfax received the sophomore scholarship award;\ MARY E. HARRIS of Mechanicsville received the senior scholarship recognition award for outstanding academic performance;\ W.D. WEAVER JR. received the faculty extension award;\ JAMES R. MCKENNA received the faculty teaching award; and\ MICHAEL KOSZTARAB received the faculty research award.

\ EDWARD WEISBAND, distinguished teaching professor at the State University of New York in Binghamton, was named to the Edward S. Diggs Endowed Chair in Social Sciences for the College of Arts and Sciences.

The following seniors, all from Blacksburg, became members of Phi Beta Kappa honor society in May:\ SUZANNE ELIZABETH ALBANNA, majoring in biochemistry;\ HART C. BLANTON, majoring in psychology;\ MARY L. DUNCAN, majoring in German;\ LEONORE NADLER, a Spanish and Women's Studies major;\ MAUREEN K. PETERS a liberal arts major;\ JON ROBERT SMIBERT who majors in urban planning;\ VALESKA TIEFEL FRIPP who is majoring in German and French; and\ MARY ELLEN FRANK, a communication studies major.

The College of Engineering appointed two professors to endowed chairs and five professors to endowed professorships. The appointments recognize eminent faculty for effective teaching and sustained and distinguished scholarship. They are:

\ G. WAYNE CLOUGH, outgoing department head of civil engineering and incoming dean of the college, was appointed to the Lewis A. Hester Chair.

\ KENNETH L. REIFSNIDER, an engineering science and mechanics professor and director of the Virginia Institute for Material Systems, was appointed to the Alexander Giacco Chair.

\ MARVIN H. AGEE, an industrial engineering and operations research professor, was appointed to the John Grado Professorship.

\ DONALD G. BAIRD, a chemical engineering professor, was selected as the Harry C. Wyatt Professor.

\ RICHARD O. CLAUS, professor of electrical engineering and director of the Fiber and Electro-Optics Research Center, was selected as the Willis G. Worcester Professor.

\ EUGENE M. CLIFF, an aerospace and ocean engineering professor, was appointed to the Reynolds Metals Professorship.

\ MARK E. DAVIS, professor of chemical engineering, was appointed to the Charles O. Gordon Professorship.

\ NATHAN COLLINS, a poultry science major and member of the Corps of Cadets, was recognized by the agriculture honor society, Alpha Zeta, as an outstanding graduating senior. Collins, of Blacksburg, earned the Virginia Poultry Federation Scholarship and Marshall Hahn Engineering Merit Scholarship. He was a distinguished military student and earned the Reserve Officers Association Award. Collins was also a member of Phi Sigma, Omicron Delta Kappa, the Poultry Science Club and the German Club.
