VOLUNTEERS HAUL TRASH AWAY FROM BAY

More than 48 tons of junk, ranging from gum wrappers to the remains of a 40-foot yacht, were hauled from the waterways, marshes and beaches of the Chesapeake Bay during the second annual Clean the Bay Day, a spokeswoman for the project said.

About 6,200 people scoured 150 miles of shoreline Saturday.

A crew from the Army Corps of Engineers struggled all morning to remove the remains of a twin-engine yacht from the floor of Scotts Creek in Portsmouth. Using a crane barge, the volunteers finally got the mud-covered vessel out of the creek.
