USAIR CITES ECONOMY, DELAYS PLANE DELIVERY

USAir is postponing delivery of a dozen new Boeing 737's because of sluggish business, Chairman Edwin I. Colodny told a Pittsburgh luncheon Friday. "The economy is soft . . . Travel is down. I don't think we should fool ourselves and say everything is rosy. It's not."

The airline is delaying delivery of the jets from 1991-92 to 1995, Colodny said. In exchange, it agreed to buy 24 more planes from Boeing and to take options on 56 more planes after 1995. Colodny said his company has one of the airline industry's younger fleets, and it will delay retiring some planes.

After 13 consecutive profitable years, USAir lost $76 million last year and $38 million in the first quarter of this year. - Staff report
