From 350 to 400 jobs out of a work force of almost 1,900 will be lost with Du Pont's decision to phase out its Orlon acrylic fiber business at its Waynesboro plant, the company said Monday. At least half the idled workers are expected to be absorbed in other company operations or take early retirement. The plant also makes Lycra, Dacron and nylon.

Smithfield Foods Inc., parent of Bunker Hill Packaging Corp. of Bedford, said earnings dropped about $2.7 million in the past fiscal year because of smaller hog supplies and excess slaughter capacity in the pork packaging industry. The company said its net income for the year ending April 29 was $7.1 million, down from $9.8 million, though sales rose to $853.4 million from $774.8 million.

Korean Air signed a $4.8 billion order Monday for 23 Boeing 747-400s, all to be delivered by the end of the decade. Frank Shrontz, Boeing chairman and chief executive officer, said traffic growth in the Pacific has been higher than in either the United States or Europe.
