SHOPPERS SHOULD KEEP CHILDREN NEARBY

I COULD not believe my eyes when I read the article about the 9-year-old boy getting a BB gun at K-Mart, loading it and shooting a 6-year-old boy in the head. The story quoted the 6-year-old's grandmother, who was shopping in another part of the store when the shooting happened, as saying: "It scared me to death. It's terrible that kids can get their hands on something like that these days."

Do people think that the stores are to furnish them baby sitters? Even if they did, not for 6- and 9-year-olds. If people must take their children when they go shopping, they should keep the children with them. I have two sons. When we went shopping, they knew to stay with me. INDIA K. ENGLAND ROANOKE
