BOTETOURT DRIVER CRUSHED BY TRUCK

A 39-year-old Botetourt County man was crushed to death Tuesday after being run over by a truck from which he had just jumped.

Walter Samuel Boyd of Lithia died after falling beneath a truck at a James River Limestone quarry near Buchanan.

Clifford Wells, chairman of the board, said Boyd was driving a truck loaded with about 35 tons of material at the time of the 1:30 p.m. accident.

Boyd was driving the truck down a slight hill when he cut it toward a ditch designed to slow trucks that lose their brakes.

He jumped from the cab toward an embankment, but fell underneath the truck, Wells said.
