Following a public hearing Tuesday night attended by a large, vocal crowd, the board voted unanimously to reduce rates from $12.50 for the first 2,000 gallons to that amount for the first 3,000 gallons.
The board had raised the rates to offset the debt involved in construction of the Fort Chiswell Water Project. A new well, storage tank and water lines will serve commercial growth in the Fort Chiswell area, as well as provide a better quality water for some residential customers.
Also Tuesday, the supervisors:
Put off until next month a request from the Barren Springs Fire Department for a sinking fund to pay for a permanent water source.
Barren Springs Fire Chief Dennis Barnes told the board his firefighters are without a water source. The department had been obtaining water from the New River to fight fires, but access to the river has been closed.
A dry hydrant is to be installed in the Barren Springs area, but Barnes said that would be only a temporary help.
Approved an ordinance levying a $2 fee on all court cases heard in Wythe County. The money will be used for upkeep and construction of the courthouse.
Agreed to proceed with preliminary testing and purchase negotiations for a 1,534-acre site in Max Meadows to be used as a joint landfill for Wythe and Bland counties.
Adopted a solid-waste facility site ordinance on emergency status to help regulate four illegal, and one legal, tire dumps discovered in Wythe County.
