BRITISH FIRM TO BUY SMYTH MOULDING PLANT

Marley plc, a British company, has agreed to buy DG Mouldings, a Smyth County maker of polystyrene and wood mouldings used in homes and industries. A new name is being considered after the sale is completed, said John Judd, marketing manager at the Atkins plant.

The plant has about 600 employees at four plants.

No changes are expected, he said, but Marley will bring additional capital, "enabling us to do more." The company said it will continue to operate as a stand-alone business, using existing management. The purchase price was not reported.

The mouldings operation, started about 30 years ago, was sold by DiGorgio Co. in February to Arthur Goldberg, a New Jersey investor. It is one of five divisions sold by DiGorgio. Another was BiltBest Windows, recently acquired by MW Manufacturers of Rocky Mount.

Marley, a publicly held company, is an international building materials manufacturer. It also owns General Shale Corp., a Johnson City, Tenn., manufacturer of bricks and blocks. General Shale owns the General Shale-Webster Brick operation in Botetourt County.
