The drop came as automakers tried to wean consumers from costly incentives. The number of vehicles covered by incentives and the amounts of rebates offered June 1-10 were lower than a year ago.
General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Corp. said they sold vehicles at an average daily rate of 28,073 during the period compared with an average of 33,223 during the same time in 1989.
Car sales skidded 19.2 percent and truck sales dropped 9.3 percent.
Through June 10 of this year, Big Three car and truck sales were running 7.7 percent behind last year's pace.
